Ukraine has long been known as the breadbasket of Europe. Its rich soil has made it an agricultural treasure house with vast fields of grain, vegetables and produce ranging from some of the best watermelons to the ubiquitous fields of sunflowers seemingly stretching towards the horizon.
Tragically the war has left its terrible indelible mark in the liberated areas. Most factories and agricultural related plants have been destroyed or severely damaged. So too with farm equipment; that which remains. Much was looted. Furthermore, over 30 million hectares of Ukraine’s territory is mined.
One consequence is high unemployment. Loss of income makes it impossible to buy seeds or tools and farm even small plots of privately owned land.
For many months New Dawn has been involved in humanitarian food distribution which contributes towards food security in these areas. An additional aim is to give people the ability to grow their own food or return to farming.
To this end, we distribute basic agricultural tools, equipment and seeds.
