The distribution of clean drinking water, hygiene kits and cleaning materials have become an essential part of New Dawn’s activities since the beginning. It is a key feature of our hub in Odesa but is even more important in the front line villages. The situation became even more perilous and pressing after the Kakhovka dam flooding. Many thousands of houses, hundreds of rural communities in Kherson and Mykolayiv states were submerged. In other areas, formally flourishing landscapes were turned into virtual deserts as irrigation water washed away.
Destroyed public water supply-grids, contaminated wells and damaged water-related technical equipment increased the scope of the humanitarian catastrophe. New Dawn responded quickly and effectively. Boreholes were drilled, canalizations replaced, pumps and technical equipment installed. Water filters and water tanks were supplied to affected communities. Many thousands of households were reconnected to the public water supply.
Still, the needs re\main immense and the water and the sanitary situation in the rural areas will remain an essential activity for many month to come.
